I Liceum Ogólnokształcące (I Grammar School) in Żywiec was founded in 1904 and
since 1911 has been based in the same ancient building. Today it is a large,
modern school with respect for tradition.
At present there are over 1000 students aged between 16 and 19, grouped in
classes with focus on various subjects, e.g. Maths-Physics classes, Computer
classes, Biology-Chemistry classes, Arts classes etc.
We possess a wide range of teaching facilities. There are three LAN-connected
computer labs, equipped with computers of high standard; 60 computers have
constant Internet access. There is a computerised library (over 20,000 books), a
Biology lab, a Chemistry lab, a Physics lab, a Geography lab, a History
classroom, a few language classrooms and 3 gym halls. In the school year
2007/2008 the School Astronomical Observatory was opened in the building's
attic, which came into being thanks to the generosity of the sponsors and which
makes it possible to observe the Sun, the Moon and planets.
For many years the good quality of the school's work has been proved by our
achievements, including successes in high rank contests and competitions, as
well as by the excellent results of the annual school leavers' examinations
called Matura.
We have managed to familiarise our students with Europe and the opportunities of
benefiting from EU educational projects. For a few years we have been actively
participating in student exchanges with young people from Unterhaching, Germany.
Within the YOUTH PROJECT we cooperated with a school from Wicklow, Ireland.
Within the EU Programme SOCRATES COMENIUS we organised a student exchange with
students from Stockholm, Sweden, which is to be continued this year. Also,
within Socrates, we hosted a language assistant in the school year
2006/2007.
In the future we wish to continue familiarising our students with the idea of
common Europe and show them the opportunities they have been given since Poland
became a member of the EU.
We are involved in Comenius 2009/2011 project: Step by step to sustainable future
